Like many places, the Adirondacks owes a great part of its history to the railroad. Unlike lots of places, it still has a part of the golden age of railroading, as it was when the Vanderbilts and the Carnegies inhabited these parts and used the trains to get back and forth between the city and their grand estates.
The train coaches are original, although today they’re climate-controlled, and the routes are, too - the original project to get the railroad running again in 1992 ran along a four-mile route that was part of the former New York Central line from Thendara south to Minnehaha. Now, nearly 70 miles of refurbished track take you past Old Forge, Saranac Lake and the Olympic Village of Lake Placid. The original equipment is restored, and includes an open-air car which is excellent for the route running through Adirondack Park.
If that’s not enough for you, consider that the Adirondack Scenic Railroad has added dinner train packages, wine tasting and several "Special Trains" complete with murder mysteries and train robberies.
