If the name seems mysterious, it’s because Mauch Chunk hasn’t been known as Mauch Chunk since 1953. In its industrial heyday in the mid-1800s, Mauch Chunk was a prime location for coal mining. But what is known now as the historic town of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania still harbors mysteries of the past.
As canals, wagon roads, dams and railroads were built to support the burgeoning coal industry, the millionaires who built them also arrived and eventually built seven grand hotels. Of these, only one remains; but it is said that the ruins of another, The Hotel Wahnetah, are just a short distance from Jim Thorpe along the Lehigh River. Very few have found them. But you’re welcome to come try!
While you’re in this “town called Jim,” you can’t help but notice that much of its Victorian architecture has been carefully preserved and restored. You’ll also find that some of the old railways are still open - on weekends at least - for thrilling trips back in time on a 1920s-style passenger train through the Lehigh Gorge. All aboard!
