The name “Pocono” means “stream between two mountains.” And one visit to Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area will tell you why. Here, the “stream” is the Delaware River, and the “mountains” are the majestic Appalachians. Add centuries of erosion…not-so-instant scenery and outdoor fun!
Basically a huge gap where the river has cut through the Kittatinny Ridge to form the “gateposts” of Mount Minsi and Mount Tammany, the Delaware Water Gap is now known as the “Gateway to the Pocono Mountains.” And a typical day here might include a family hike on the Applachian Trail which runs through the eastern part of the park, a brisk climb on the Red Dot Trail to the top of the Kittatinny Ridge (the view is unbelievable) or a stroll past Dingman’s or Silver Thread waterfalls.
The fact that the Poconos are not really mountains at all is a big part of the beauty here. The water is actually tumbling off of a huge dissected plateau. And the entire gap is a testament to the immense power of water - keep in mind that this geological wonder is the result of 250 million years of erosion that continues even as you watch!
