Palace Saloon is not your average watering hole. After making it through Prohibition, it’s actually Florida’s oldest “continuously operated” drinking establishment! And it was the first hard liquor bar to begin serving Coca-Cola in 1905. So stop by for a seaside beer and a side of history.
What began in 1903 as the “Ship Captain’s Bar” became a local legend as time progressed. First, the saloon’s original owner was good friends with Adolphus Busch – yep, of Anheuser-Busch – and they say that Busch actually traveled from St. Louis to oversee the saloon’s trademark sign fixture’s installation! Along with the sign, the bar features inlaid mosaic floors, gas lamps and embossed tin ceilings – just as it did in the beginning.
So how did this joint make it through Prohibition to continue quenching thirsts in the 21st century? The palace sold gasoline, ice cream, cigars and the 3-percent “near-beer.” The saloon suffered a fire in 1999, but defied death again thanks to dedicated restoration, it made it through. And today, it’s is still serving drinks and even nightly entertainment – after everything it’s survived, we think you owe the Palace Saloon a visit!
