Since St. Augustine is considered America’s oldest city, it’s no surprise that Florida’s oldest house would be located here. The building is actually the Gonzalez-Alvarez House, and it’s just brimming with hundreds of years of history!
The site of the present-day house has been occupied since the 1600s, but the physical dwelling has been around since the 1700s. Its Spanish, British and American influences spin a fascinating web of history that you can explore inside the museum complex. The museum is made up of a number of buildings on the property, along with a garden, a museum store – even a typical 18th-century kitchen! And your admission includes access to every facility.
Exhibitions are shown frequently on various subjects in St. Augustine’s history inside the Page L. Edwards Gallery. Step into the Tovar Building for a peak at the Museum of Florida’s Military, complete with uniforms, weapons and other authentic equipment from decades of service. The garden is a prime place to see in the international influences of the grounds; here plants grown by Spanish, British and American colonists can be enjoyed behind protective high walls.
