Castillo de San Marcos has the distinction of being the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States! It was built back in 1672 as a precautionary by the Spanish against the British. Today all you have to do is step inside to feel back in time.
Re-enactments and events are a constant reminder of history in the St. Augustine of today. Enjoy a cannon firing demonstration for a feel for what early colonists might have felt in the midst of border battles. Annual events are a great way to reconnect with the past, on Spanish Heritage Day, the Siege of 1702 or Hispanic Heritage Day. The Junior Ranger Program is a hit with the younger kids and after only 1-1/2 hours, they’ll receive their own official badge!
This National Monument is open every day of the year except December 25 and if you pick up a Castillo Park Pass for a small fee, you and your family can enjoy access to the park for an entire year!
