You may have heard of “Old Florida,” and wondered what it meant. The answer is right here, among these 20 exquisite properties in the Pensacola National Register Historic District. Ten are open to the public, and two are full museums with truly rich sights and information.
One of these used to be the city hall - albeit in the early 1900s. Today it’s the T.T. Wentworth, Jr. Florida State Museum, and it contains two floors of artifacts and exhibits including 1920s fashion, a rotating display of 42 historic doll houses and an upcoming Civil War Soldiers exhibit. A third floor houses the Discovery Gallery, a hands-on children’s exhibit.
These are all under the auspices of West Florida Historic Preservation Incorporated, which also preserves the Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site in Milton - the largest 19th-century water-powered industrial complex in northwest Florida. From 1817 to 1855 it was a water-powered sawmill, a lumber mill with planning and lathing machines, grist mill, bucket and pail factory, shingle mill, cotton textile mill, and experimental silk cultivation operation. Today it’s an archaeological site, which continues to yield valuable artifacts.
