For a look at the sky you quite literally can’t get anywhere else, head to the summit of Mauna Kea volcano. This is the world’s tallest mountain – measured from the ocean floor – and it’s also home of the world’s largest astronomical observatory!
What makes this volcano so exceptional for star-gazing is that its peak sits above about 40% of the earth’s atmosphere and 90% of the water vapor and more – making for some outstanding clear nights! This mountain is a rare opportunity to actually drive to the summit. Be aware though – it’s recommended to stop at the Visitor Information Station at 9,200 feet to get some information and adjust to the altitude! You can stick around the station for the stargazing program, or join the summit tour. You need to drive your own 4-wheel drive vehicle, and be sure to fill up your tank before you make your ascent!
The tour will bring you inside at least one of the Mauna Kea observatories – there are 13 working telescopes currently operated by various countries. If you’re not up for the drive up the mountain, there are also commercial tour operators in the area that will take you there!
