Those who pioneered the Old Southwest - the one that existed way before the fancy golf resorts and spas - sought a new land and a better life. Today's Historic C.O.D. Ranch recalls when the land was new and provides the better life; but it's helpful to bring some of that pioneering spirit along.
In this case, "pioneering" can be substituted for "creative"; This was actually a cattle ranch in 1874, and its restoration was a five-year project during which the original adobe, stone and wood foundations were used to re-create the ranch as it must have been more than a century ago. The man who bought and restored it is also a poet, and many of the re-created casitas hold original, local works of art.
The idea here is that people in today's world need time to step out of the hectic pace, reconnect and remember about themselves and their relationships. There's a good dose of nature involved, too, with the combination of desert landscapes, the Coronado National Forest and day trips to sites like Tombstone, Old Tucson, the State Park for Environmental Education and the Aravaipa Wilderness.
