We've found that the best adventure vacations are often the best because the sense of adventure continues even in the fleeting moments when you're not on the rapids, bikes, horses etc. This is why one of our favorite spots is Falling Waters Adventure Resort in Bryson City, North Carolina.
Not that any of the above will disappoint. Falling Waters is surrounded by natural features that, especially for the adventurous, could only be considered world-class. Besides the more well-known names like the Appalachian Trail and Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the resort rests near the Nantahala Gorge which, if you're into whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking, should make your ears perk up, and the Tsali mountain bike trail (ditto for mountain bikers).
Somehow a motel room or a hotel suite just doesn't seem appropriate for all of this outdoor activity; so instead, Falling Waters gives you the chance to stay in a yurt, a tent-like structure first used in ancient Mongolia when the people were nomads, the weather was changeable and life itself was an adventure. These yurts, however, aren't exactly like the original Mongol design; they're actually fairly luxurious with French doors, ceiling fan and décor including a queen-sized bed!
