For some, the day after Christmas is – the day after Christmas. For others, especially in the U.K., it’s Boxing Day. In Canada, Boxing Day means a retail rush that has set national records for single-day economic transactions. For you, it’s just part of a great way to celebrate the holiday season.
It’s as simple as making the no-passport-needed trip across the U.S.-Canada border to Niagara Falls in Ontario’s Festival Country. Besides the glittering casinos, there’s a spectacular selection of wine and wineries here; don’t miss the Niagara Ice Wine, which is quickly gaining fame. There’s plenty of history here, too, with sites such as Old Fort Erie, the start of the Freedom Trail, and relics from the War of 1812. And, of course, there are the Falls: more than 168,000 cubic metres (six million cubic feet) of water per minute plunge 52 metres (170 feet) into the Maid of the Mist Pool. The Niagara Gorge itself extends for 11 kilometres (seven miles) downstream.
To make your holiday complete, plan to attend the Winter Festival of Lights, Canada's foremost illumination festival featuring more than 125 animated lighting displays, three million tree and ground lights, and fireworks displays. This festival takes place within the 5 km (3+ mile) parkway route known as the Niagara Parks Winter Wonderland, highlighted by the world-famous Enchantment of Disney® displays and the world's largest illuminated Canadian-American Flag.
