Perched at 3,500 feet elevation in Balsam, North Carolina, the Balsam Mountain Inn rests in a gap dividing the Plott Balsam and Richland Balsam mountain ranges. Originally called the Balsam Mountain Springs Hotel, guests of the inn would take day trips to the nearby peaks of the Balsam Gap, which back then was home to the highest passenger rail station in the inn. Built in 1908, the corridors of the inn were created extra-wide to allow in steamer trunks of their summertime guests.
