When ore deposits were found in 1873, a short-lived mining boom began on the land the resort now occupies. Once the miners moved out, Walt Disney tried to move in to turn the area into a world-class ski resort. In 1978, however, the area was annexed to the Sequoia National Park, securing a future for the then family-owned Silver City Mountain Resort.
