Wings Over North Georgia: Georgia’s Premier Airshow

Rome, Georgia, is a scenic and relaxing fall vacation destination that's located in the picturesque foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The city has something for everyone whether you're embarking on an outdoor adventure, or participating in one of the community events.

Wings Over North Georgia is a classic air show that’s centered around the skilled aviators from the United States Air Force Thunderbirds.  The event is entering its fifth year in 2016 with over 60,000 spectators expected in attendance. At the show, you’ll see a variety of different aircraft and Thunderbird pilots showcasing their skills with breathtaking maneuvers and tricks. Civilian pilots will be on hand as well, showing off their planes and unique aerial moves. On the opening of the event, hometown country singer Travis Tritt will be holding a concert with a large fireworks show to follow. Aim high for your next Georgia getaway and make your way to Rome for Wings Over North Georgia. ResortsandLodges.com got the opportunity to interview Brenda Little, Representative for the event, to talk about this aeronautical showcase.

RAL: How long has the event been running?

BL: This will be the 5th annual Wings Over North Georgia.

RAL: How many annual participants do you draw?

BL: Weather issues in 2015 kept attendance to 38,000. In 2014, with favorable weather, attendance was 58,000. We anticipate attendance to reach around 60,000 spectators.

RAL: What is the typical demographic makeup of the event? Children? Families? Couples?

BL: This is a great event for the entire family. Kid's Zone, aircraft on display, food, air show performances by a variety of military and civilian teams, concerts and fireworks!

RAL: Take me through the activities.

BL: The USAF Thunderbirds will perform along with the F/A-18 Super Hornet Tactical Demo Team. Additional aerobatic performers include Mike Wiskus, Michael Goulian, Patty Wagstaff, Buck Roetmann, the US SOCOM Para-Commandos, Bob Carlton’s jet-powered glider, Bill Braack’s jet car, and the Army Heritage Foundation’s Sky Soldier Helicopter Demo. Saturday night features a concert series with headliner and country music artist, Travis Tritt, with a great fireworks show following the concert. Several aircraft will be on display in the spectator areas. Warbird rides are also available for an additional fee.

The highlight of the day on Saturday will be the Parade of Veterans which is a military tribute to all current and former military personnel. It's a wonderful tribute to those who have served in the various branches of the US military.

RAL: What dining options will attendees find?

BL: There are several food vendors at the show. They will be offering everything from hot dogs and BBQ to seafood dishes. Select VIP/hospitality tickets have food and beverages included in the ticket price.

RAL: What's the overall environment like?

BL: It’s a family friendly atmosphere that's filled with a strong sense of military and patriotic pride. The environment is vibrant and festive. It's the perfect combination of flying, food, and fun!

RAL: Are there any lodging specials that are set up specifically for the event?

BL: People interested in attending can check with neighboring hotels for air show rates. Some may offer air show discounts, but there are no official lodging partners. Make sure to reserve early because as most lodging sells out quickly. There is also onsite camping available, which is a bit of a rarity for an air show. The event has premium infield space (power-water-pump out) on asphalt and grass, in addition to standard camping accommodations.

RAL: Does this drive business to your local economy?

BL: The initial air show generated $2.6M in revenue for the city of Rome. That number grew to over $5.4M in 2014, and we’re expecting another big year in 2016.

RAL: Does the event support a special cause in the community? (School funds, etc.)

BL: Various performers participate in school and hospital visits. There are a number of volunteer organizations that assist with air show operations in exchange for contributions to the charitable organizations. The show is organized by a group of former military personnel, so there is always an emphasis on including the NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) and other youth organizations.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

BL: There is something for everyone. You can enjoy the show as a family, group, or even solo. It’s a great place to meet new people and enjoy one of the finest events in Northwest Georgia.
