Top North Carolina Beaches

The state of North Carolina contains some of the finest beaches in the U.S. The Tarheel State has over 300 miles of shoreline, ranging from pristine white sand to rugged rocky beachfront. Coastal cities and barrier islands offer visitors a spectrum of beach activities and scenic vistas. The travel guides at ResortsandLodges.com have compiled a list of some of the state’s great beach locations.

Bald Head Island is a 20-minute ferry ride from Southport, and offers a secluded beach experience. Bald Head features 14 miles of beachfront, ideal for plenty of great outdoor activities. The island has three easily accessible beaches; East, West, and South. East Beach is perfect for surfing and getting out of the wind, but its tides and surf can be dangerous for swimmers. South Beach is ideal for families with its vast stretches of sand, gentle surf, and a gentle breeze. West Beach is good for watching sunsets and hikes, but strong currents also make the waters dangerous for swimming.

Wrightsville Beach is a beach town located 10 miles east of Wilmington, on one of the barrier islands that comprises Cape Fear Coast. The town of roughly 2,500 residents features one of the most popular stretches of beachfront in the state. The beaches here are perfect for families and feature lifeguards, parking, and public facilities. Visitors will find a world class surf, making it an ideal location for surfers and watersport enthusiasts. Fishing is another popular beachfront activity, and Wrightsville is considered one of the top fishing locations in the region. After a day of fun in the sun, head downtown and enjoy the restaurants, bars, and live entertainment venues.

Emerald Isle is a quiet beach community on the Bogue Banks, just south of the beautiful Croatan National Forest. It has over 12 miles of stunning beachfront, presenting a variety of activities. From hiking through the maritime forests to taking photographs of the stunning Bogue Inlet, visitors will have little trouble finding activities on the beach. Watersports are another big draw for visitors, and other popular activities include fishing and boating. Visitors to the island will find plenty of beach access points and local outfitters, with all the latest outdoor equipment. The island is also home to several walking and biking trails, which are perfect for getting around and seeing the scenery.

Topsail Beach is a small beach town of roughly 400 residents that’s located 20 miles northeast of Wilmington, on Topsail Island. The island was home to pirates in the 18th century, but now it's a year-round beachfront vacation destination. The eastern edge of the island features miles of pristine white sand beaches, and the island's largest beach, Serenity Point, is found at its southernmost tip. At Serenity Point visitors will encounter ample space for activities, white sand, clear blue water, and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Topsail Sound. Fishing is big here; visitors have their choice of shore, pier, coastal, and deep sea fishing expeditions. Local outfitters and fishing shops can help you with charters, equipment, guides, and more.

Carolina Beach is a one-of-a-kind beachfront community located in the southeastern portion of the state, 13-miles north of Bald Head Island. It has over 5,700 residents and something to offer every visitor. The Freeman Park Recreation Area is the main public beach in town, and features activities that range from crabbing to horseback riding. The park is a trash-free area designed to preserve local wildlife and environmental resources. The Carolina Beach Boardwalk is another top tier local attraction, stretching over 700 feet along the beautiful coastline and featuring numerous shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The town is also home to great community events like the Carolina Beach Music Festival.
