Named after Anthony Judson Hayward, a lumberman who discovered the area and deemed it ideal for building a saw-mill in the 1870s, Hayward, Wisconsin now welcomes travelers to experience its small-town charm and rich history in a variety of ways. Whether you’re here with family, on a fishing trip with the guys, or looking to unwind with your sweetheart, this laid-back destination lets you focus on life’s simple pleasures. 

1. Wilderness Walk

A family-friendly animal farm in the heart of Hayward, Wilderness Walk is everything you’re looking for in a fun-filled trip. This 35-acre farm and recreation park is sure to delight not just the kids but the kid-at-heart, offering plenty of activities and attractions that will get the whole family excited. Teach the kids how to cast a line at the trout ponds or stop by the petting zoo to see some of your favorite farm animals up close. Onsite walking trails let you view wild and exotic animals such as their Siberian tiger and ring-tailed lemur! Picnic areas, a video arcade, mystery house and maze are also available for your enjoyment!

2. HookStone Winery

It’s like being in Napa without ever having to leave the Midwest. HookStone Winery is a Napa-style winery featuring a tasting room and gift shop. All of their wines are created onsite with grapes shipped in from California and Washington, providing you with the best wines in the area. Try their speciality Walleye White Zin, which is made with Wisconsin cranberries!  

3. Scheers Lumberjack Shows & Village

For something truly out of the ordinary, plan a visit to Scheers Lumberjack Shows & Village! This unique destination brings together a bit of entertaining sport with rich history and fun comedy to make for a memorable experience. Watch participants try their best at log-rolling, pole-climbing, hot saw and more--all performed live! If you stop by Thursday through Sunday, you can also enjoy a relaxing lunch and dinner at the River Deck Restaurant!

4.Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame

Hayward is a haven for fishing enthusiasts and there’s no place better to experience the city’s fishing culture than with a stop at the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. This Hayward landmark affectionately named Big Musky, sits atop a 88,000-gallon pond full of fish and is an incredible 4 ½ stories high. Hosting 20 people at a time in its large mouth, it offers a fantastic panoramic view of Lake Hayward! The rest of fish serves as a museum that you can explore at your leisure!
