The Ideal Sports Lodge for the Avid Adventurer

For more that 150 years, Wilsons on Moosehead Lake has set the standard for excellence in Maine sports lodges. They know that you could have chosen to spend your precious vacation anywhere, but you chose them. And so, they owe you a weekend (or more) to remember. Owners Scott & Alison Snell explain it thusly: “We look forward to becoming part of your treasured Moosehead memories for years to come.” If you’re an avid adventurer, aspiring fisherman, or just want to experience the natural splendor of northern Maine for yourself, Wilsons is the place for you.

Wilson's main claim to fame is their fantastic fishing. Regardless of season, the fish will be biting and the friendly staff will be more than happy to assist you in your pursuit of the fish you’ll be telling your grandkids about. Since 2012, the lodge has expanded its fishing offerings by adding more trips, staff, and guides, just to keep up with the high demand. That’s a pretty good sign there’s some quality fishing to be had here.

Moosehead Lake is filled with trout, salmon, and lake trout just waiting for a fisherperson to catch them.  Moosehead has some extremely large smallmouth bass as well. There are multiple ways to fish: next to lakefront cabins, fly-fishing on the Kennebec River, or even by a chartered fishing tour via the onsite East Outlet Guide & Fly Shop. Instructions are provided, all equipment is available and is, of course, top-rate.

Other than fishing, there’s a huge variety of fun activities to keep you and your party occupied. In the winter, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are big draws. With dozens of private scenic trails and the famous “Moosehead Trail,” there’s little chance that you’ll run out of something new to see and explore. Boating, canoeing, sightseeing, wildlife photography, moose safaris, four-wheeling, whitewater rafting, and climbing and hiking on the nearby Kineo, Squaw and Spencer Mountains are all available throughout the other seasons, so no guest can ever complain about being bored!

Of course, a lot of these activities are physically taxing, and even the most intrepid adventurer needs to recharge their batteries after a time. Enter Wilson’s cozy cottages, full of rustic charm and amenities. Ranging in size from one to five bedrooms, each comes with full bathrooms, fully equipped kitchens, screened porches, and panoramic views of Moosehead Lake (complete with Mount Katahdin standing majestically in the background).

As the longest continually operated set of Sporting Camps in Maine, Wilsons has a fair amount of expectation placed upon it, and it exceeds those expectations at every opportunity. The employees and owners know that time and money is precious to their guests, and aim to make the most out of both. As owner Alison Snell says, Wilsons is “the perfect place to do everything…or nothing at all."
