Taste of Town: 32 Years of Myrtle Beach's Finest Foods

Entering its 32nd year, the Taste of Town, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has been bringing together culinary creations and community to support a good local cause. People from all over South Carolina and the Southeastern United States make their way to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center for this unique sampling of delicious food and fun entertainment. Beginning with just 20 restaurants in the 1980’s, the festival has grown into something much larger. Now, the festival has over 50 different restaurants that compete for a variety of different awards. Some of the judged categories include Best Entree, Best Dessert, Best Booth Design Small, Best Booth Design Large and don't forget about the ever popular People’s Choice and Kid’s Choice Awards. From cheesecake to BBQ, there is a delectable dish for all who attend.

When it comes to entertainment, The Taste of Town has something for everyone to enjoy. Live music from popular local bands fills the convention center and provides a fun and festive atmosphere for the festival. Kids will love the scavenger hunt and the CCU Kids Zone that is filled with activities. Last, but not least, the award ceremony is a great way to wrap up the festival. The fun and competitive environment is entertaining and will help create a lasting memory of The Taste of Town event. No matter what type of food you love, this festival has something for you. We got the opportunity to sit down with event representative, Bridgette Brumfield, to chat about the event and what it means to the community.

RAL: Tell me about the event.

BB: Since 1956, St. Andrew Catholic School has provided students kindergarten through eighth grade with an education of academic excellence that is rooted in faith and love. St. Andrew embraces the community through school-wide service projects, instilling in its students the importance and value of living a life of “service beyond self”.

In 1984, a creative group of parents organized the first Taste of the Town as a fundraiser for St. Andrew Catholic School. The fledgling event made its debut hosting about 20 restaurants, it was well-attended, and the event gained immediate popularity in the Myrtle Beach community. Still to this day our community of over 500 volunteers help make this the most successful event of the year!

Now in its 32nd year, Taste of the Town features over 50 restaurants, culinary awards, live entertainment, and is poised as one of the Grand Strand area’s most highly anticipated food festivals. Over the past several years, attendance of this one-night event has soared to 8,000 - 10,000 locals and visitors. Taste of the Town’s growing success is greatly made possible by the generous contributions of local businesses through various levels of sponsorship.

RAL: Tell me about the local lodging.

BB: The event is held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center which is conveniently attached to the Sheraton Hotel.  Also, you are just a few blocks away from the pristine beaches and your choice of many hotels up and down the boulevard. A few other local lodging options include Caribbean Resort & Villas and The Breakers Resort.

RAL: What does the event mean to the community?

BB: Taste of the Town is the primary annual fundraiser for St. Andrew Catholic School, and event proceeds benefit the school’s Capital Improvement Fund for purchase of items such as playground equipment, structural renovations, classroom Smart Boards, and iPads for middle school students.

RAL: Why Should people come to your event?

BB: People should come and experience the variety of restaurants from across the Grand Strand, all under one roof. We have great entertainment throughout the evening and many great activities, games, and prizes for the kids! There is something for everyone! And most  importantly, it's the biggest fundraiser of the year for St. Andrew Catholic School.
