Summer Travel 101

It’s the time of the year to plan that dream summer getaway you’ve always wanted. Whether its with your family, friends or alone, ResortsandLodges.com stands ready to provide your travel tips that will help make your vacation safe and the best it can be.

Planning Your Trip

As in most aspects of life, planning is key to making your goals a reality and it is no different with summer travel. Make reservations with hotels months in advance, as well as a confirmation call or e-mail before you leave. There is no worse feeling than reaching your destination only to have miscommunication waiting for you upon arrival.

This advice goes for your activities, rentals and events as well. Ensure they are confirmed and that you have no disappointment or delay when your time really matters. If your trip is international, make sure to line up any paperwork at least 2 months in advance. Passports and special permissions usually have a wait time of at least 1 month. If cost is an issue, you may consider going all inclusive with your vacation. This takes much of the planning out of your stay with activities and meals included in the price of your room. Remember to pick a location and activities that fit you and your family.

Trips by Airplane

If you're taking to the air for your mode of travel there a few things to remember. Get your assigned seat early and don’t be late. The only way you can get bumped from an assigned seat is if you're late to the gate.

It is also a good idea to check in via the internet before you leave home. This option is usually available up to 24 hours before the departure time. If at all possible schedule your flight for the middle of the work week. Traffic is slow at this time and will take some of the hassle from your trip. Give yourself ample time to get from home to the airport and account for the time it will take to check-in luggage and physically walk to the gate. If your trip is taking place during a holiday, try to give yourself as much time as possible. If at all possible try to leave a day early and stay one late to extend your vacation and avoid the rush.

Road Trips

Automobile travel during the summer months can be enjoyable but when it comes to a long distance trip behind your own wheel there are precautions that every road traveler should abide.

First, check that condition of your tires, check for inflation, wear or damage. Does your can need breaks or a oil and coolant change?

Second, bring your car to a trusted mechanic for a proper tune up.  Let them know you're taking a long trip and to look out for anything that may need to be done. It’s far better to pay for some preventative maintenance compared to being stranded in the middle of nowhere, far from home.

Packing

When packing for your trip there are a variety different guidelines to follow. First and foremost you must consider your mode of transportation. If packing for air travel remember that some airlines now charge for a second piece of luggage. Also dont forget the restrictions on carrying toiletries (three bottles of three ounces or less in a clear quart-sized bag to be presented for screening). Check with the TSA for additional information.

Also, pack appropriately for the weather you will encounter. Get an extended forecast for the area and read other visitor reviews for the area. A good way to save space is bringing undergarments you can throw away as your trip progresses. This will leave you extra room for souvenirs when you're ready to depart. Traveling by car allows you to overpack to an extent but just remember to leave yourself enough room in your automobile to see in all directions clearly. Also pack the load evenly in the automobile to ensure the safest possible journey.

Traveling with Kids

If you're traveling with kids remember to travel equipped for a variety of situations. Depending on your mode of transportation pack snacks and drinks (may want to limit if you want to keep bathroom breaks at a minimum). The biggest obstacle for children is the boredom of travel. Make a pack of games, activities and books that are easily accessible.

It is also a good idea to bring along a tablet or personal DVD player to help keep them remain occupied if the trip is an extended duration. Don’t forget to bring an array of towels, wipes and bags for any messes that will happen on the trip. As far as accommodations for the family are concerned, remember that the more square footage you have the better of you’ll be.
