Steinley Cup Microbrew Festival & Competition: Wyoming's First and Top Craft Beer Festival

Saratoga, Wyoming is a fun and unique destination, perfect for your next summer adventure. Here you’ll find amazing natural scenery, an abundance of activities, and great accomi.

Saratoga was established in the 1880’s, built around a natural hot spring that attracted people from far and wide. The hot spring still attracts visitors, but what really makes it a top getaway destination is the stunning landscape, diverse wildlife, shopping options and classic western charm. If you're an outdoor enthusiast, this is your place. No matter which direction you look, you’ll be treated to majestic mountain vistas and lush wilderness. Not far from town lies the Medicine Bow National Forest, which is ideal for a host of activities like hiking, biking, photography, and rock climbing. Do you love scenic drives? The area is home to two great scenic byways: Snowy Range Scenic Byway and Battle Highway Scenic Byway. On these routes you’ll encounter the full range of local landscapes. You’ll also find plenty of fun things to do without leaving the comfortable confines of the city. From visiting all the local shops to sampling the hometown cuisine, Saratoga won’t disappoint. Another factor that makes this a great city to visit is the Steinley Cup Microbrew Festival & Competition.

The Steinley Cup Microbrew Festival is entering its 21st year as one of the premier beer events in the region. Unique from its inception, the event features only non-commercial microbreweries from Wyoming. You’ll find beer tastings from 23 different breweries, the opportunity to speak to the brewers themselves, and great live music to enjoy. The event will feature an arts and crafts show, as well as a playground for kids 12 and under. There will be an assortment of food options on hand and chili tasting in addition to beer sampling. Take a break from the regular big beer events and sample the best microbrews Wyoming has to offer at the Steinley Cup Microbrew Festival & Competition. ResortsandLodges.com got the chance to interview Stacy Crimmins, Chief Executive Officer for the Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce to talk about the event.

RAL: How long has the event been running?

SC: This is the 21st annual, it started in 1995. It was the first craft beer festival in the state.

RAL: How many annual participants do you draw and who are they demographically? Children? Families? Couples?

SC: Typically, there are between 600 and 800 participants between the ages of 21 and 70. Many family groups-multigenerational, families with young children (under aged 12) who are easily occupied by the playground equipment, couples and groups of friends, young adults who grew up here come back this weekend to see old friends.

RAL: What makes this event unique?

SC: It was the first and it is the Official Wyoming State Microbrew Competition. This is the only festival with strictly Wyoming-based breweries, no commercial breweries invited, safe and fun family event. Because of our setting, the event is more intimate than other beer festivals. The craft brew masters enjoy talking to people and promoting their brands because they do not have that opportunity at most other festivals.

RAL: Take me through the activities patrons will find at the event.

SC: Here is a list of the activities that people will find.

  • Beer tasting from Wyoming-based microbreweries (23 invited)

  • Chili tasting as part of the chili competition

  • Small craft show

  • Live music with “Slopeside”, a Denver based band

RAL: Will there be any dining options?

SC: There will be several concessionaires onsite with food options including burgers, ice cream, lemonade, kabobs, and more.

RAL: Is there maybe one place in particular that guests have been flocking to since the event started?

SC: Everyone spends time at the Hobo Hot Pool sometime during the weekend. Mineral hot springs are open 24/7 and are free. Most people enjoy the blue-ribbon trout fishing on this freestone river.

RAL: Does the event support a special cause in the community?

SC: This is one of only two fundraisers for the Chamber of Commerce. We are a self sustaining organization and are involved in every aspect of our small community.

RAL: Does lodging hit max occupancy during the event?

SC: Yes, all motels are 100% booked for the weekend, while bed & breakfasts, vacation rentals and campgrounds are full as well.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

SC: Saratoga is a very authentic Western community surrounded by fantastic natural resources. Many folks fish or hike with their families during the weekend. It’s a relaxed atmosphere without the hustle-and-bustle of urban life. Families spend more time talking with each other and enjoying quality time without the noise.
