A location at the end of the Oregon Trail brought many new residents to Portland. The city began to develop as a major port, center for commerce, and a top lumber producers in the Northwest during the mid-to-late 19th century. The city saw its size double in first decade of the 20th century, due to the Lewis and Clark Exposition (which was celebrating the centennial anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition) and the ample opportunities for work. RAL: Tell me a little bit about the event.

SW: The Portland Spring Beer and Wine Fest is now in it's 22nd year. Each year the event seems to gain popularity and this year we are expecting over 9,000 people in attendance. The event is held at the Oregon Convention Center in Halls A & B. Demographically we see a wide range of patrons at the festival. The age range is 25 to 75 with equal representation among males and females. with families, singles and groups mixed together.

RAL: What makes the event unique?

SW: There are over 150 vendors that are mostly small batch producers of cheese, chocolates, snacks, beers, ciders, wines and distilled spirits. We also have excellent live music including Zydeco on the Main Stage. Our Food Court features food carts and tasty treats. We have the a little of something for everyone at the festival.

RAL: Take me through what attendees will experience at the festival.

SW: There is always a line to get in when we open at noon, and on Friday the first 500 attendees get in free of charge! After that, it will only cost $10 to get in, but people still like being in that first group of 500. You also have the option to purchase a multi-day pass or special package deals. There is plenty to do and see with every admission. As you enter the event, you will greeted with Steel Drum music from the Northwest Pan Man. There will be over 40 breweries, many cider makers and wineries to choose from, plus lots to samples to eat and pair with the delicious beverages.

The Main Stage has the New Orleans Brass Band, Garcia Birthday Band, Tess Barr Blues band and Zydeco band to get you dancing. The live music really adds an extra level of enjoyment and engagement for all of our patrons.

RAL: What can attendees expect to find for local lodging?

SW: Portland has quite a few places to stay for all budgets, and most of them are in fairly close proximity to the event. The convention center is on many bus, light rail and MAX routes, so it is very accessible from different parts of the city. The festival is surrounded by hotels, but we do not have a partnership this year due to the ongoing renovations of our usual lodging partner. A few local options to consider include: The Heathman Hotel, Hampton Inn Portland/Clackamas and Quality Inn Gresham - Portland East.

RAL: What does the event mean to the community?

SW: The small producers get quite a bit of exposure, while locals and tourists like to buy Portland made products. In addition it's a great place to get to know new people and network. The extra people that the festival brings into Portland provide a nice boost to sales at local businesses.

Over the years the festival has been able to enrich many local and national causes such as Alzheimer's, Heart & Cancer Research, MDA, and the Oregon Brew Crew to name a few.

RAL: Why should people come?

SW: The Spring Beer & Wine Fest is a reflection of Portland and the Pacific Northwest, with its bounty of amazing products, tastes and experiences. Portland is the perfect travel destination to overwhelm the senses, from inhaling a hoppy IPA to savoring award winning cheeses. Spend a rainy day at an urban winery or distillery. Get a bite to eat from a food cart or dine at a chef's table. Portland and the Spring Beer & Wine Fest should be on everyone's bucket list.
