RAL: Can you give us some background information about Overtown in general?

CL: Overtown is one of Miami’s earliest historically black communities, formerly called “Colored Town”. It became a tourist and entertainment destination, not only for local blacks, but people of African descent from around the country. White tourist and white residents frequented this neighborhood to enjoy the entertainment, to partake of the exotic food and to listen to popular and gospel music.

Overtown once rivaled the Harlem night scene of New York, earning the nickname “Miami’s Little Broadway”. Famous artists’ of the day such as Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, The Impressions, Brook Benton, Red Foxx and a host of others performed and stayed at Overtown’s finest accommodations including Knight Beat Lounge & Hotel, The Carver Hotel, The Rockland Palace, The Dorsey, The Marsha Ann and The Lord Calvert.

In the 1960’s and early 70’s expressway construction and urban renewal had a devastating impact on Overtown. The projects displaced close to 12,000 people, the community lost 51.2 percent of its population and 33 percent of its businesses.

Fast forward to 2016, Overtown is undergoing transformation and is on the fast track to becoming one of the City’s world class destinations with the construction of the Miami Worldcenter, Miami Innovation District and other multi-million dollar development projects.

RAL: What does the event mean to the community?

CL: OMAF serves as an opportunity for the community to restore pride and dignity back into Overtown as well as bring music and arts back to the community.

RAL: Does this drive business to your local economy?

CL: OMAF serves as a forum for vendors to educate, inspire and connect with the community therefore it encourages businesses, even those outside of Overtown, to participate in the festival which in turn helps the local economy.

RAL: Does the event support a special cause in the community?

CL: In addition to promoting economic development and the reconstruction of Overtown, OMAF supports the local non-profit T.E.E.S (Teen Exercising Extraordinary Success). T.E.E.S helps youth find their dreams through educational and personal enrichment.

CL: From the savory foods of cultures all around the globe to the soulful vibe radiated from the multiple Grammy nominated artists who perform live, OMAF offers an experience that cannot be captured at any other festival in South Florida. Not only will festival goers have fun but they will be a part of history and the positive renewal of one of Miami’s most historic communities.
