54 Years of History, Fun and Memories at the Milford Frontier Days

Situated just 15 miles northeast of the metro area, Milford, Ohio, embodies a charming small town feel and attitude, while maintaining a close proximity to the cosmopolitan attractions of Cincinnati. The modern history of the Milford dates back to the late 18th century, when John Hageman became one of the area's first permanent residents and major landowners. From laying out lots to helping establish infrastructure, Hageman’s fingerprints are all over the early history of  Milford. In fact, the town was known as Hagemans Mill until he left the area in the 1810’s.

While Milford might not be the largest city in Ohio (population of roughly 6,700) it’s not short on fun things to do and unique locations to visit. If you're into outdoor activities, the comprehensive park system features clean, beautiful and well maintained green spaces. You can enjoy activities like hiking, biking, fishing, photography and much more. If shopping is your game, then the downtown area is perfect for you. You’ll find a diverse collection of unique shops, owned by local residents, that feature items hard to find elsewhere. Milford is also home to some great restaurants and food stores. Again, they are locally owned and you’ll find everything from a wine bar to a store specializing in chocolate. A perfect time to experience Milford is during one of the great community events, like the ever popular Milford Frontier Days.

Almost half way through its fifth decade of existence, Milford Frontier Days has established itself as a can't-miss event in the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area. During the four days of the event, nearly 10,000 people are expected to flock to Milford. Whether you’re looking for a great day trip for the family or a couples getaway in a scenic community, this event is for you. Kids will be overjoyed with the fun atmosphere, great amusement park-style rides, pony rides and tasty festival food. Live music will be played by some great regional acts, really setting a fun and vibrant tone for the whole event. Milford Frontier Days is a great opportunity for you to meet new people, experience a new community and create lasting memories! We got the chance to interview Charles Evans, Representative for the Milford Frontier Days, to talk about this unique event.

RAL: Tell me a little bit about the event.

CE: Frontier Days is a community festival that features one of the largest parades in the Eastern Cincinnati area. It is a four-day event that features live music, food and rides. This will be the 54th year Frontier Days has taken place, and we don’t expect that to change anytime soon. We do not track exact annual numbers, but we estimate it to be over 10,000 people attend each year. We try to cater to families, but at night it is more focused on adults with live bands.

RAL: What makes this event unique?

CE: This event draws people back to Milford as an unofficial class reunion every year. It started around canoe races on the Little Miami River, but the canoe races have since been dropped due to rising insurance and lack of volunteers. We have live local bands at night and one of the largest frog jumping contests in the Midwest.

RAL: Take me through a day at the event.

CE: We have a great set of activities this year including amusement park rides and games, pony rides, great live music, the ever popular youth decorated bike parade, frog jumping contest and the list goes on.

For dining options there will be festival faire and food booths sponsored by local restaurants and/or local non profit organizations

The festival is located on the grounds of the American Legion and Riverside Park in Historic Milford, on the banks of the Little Miami River. It’s the perfect scenic backdrop for the event.

RAL: What can attendees expect to find for local lodging?

CE: The Milford Miami Township area has some good lodging options to choose from including a Holiday Inn Express, Hilton Gardens and Homewood Suites.

RAL: What does the event mean to the community?

CE: This is a reunion of sorts where classmates meet every year. This event also allows local non-profit groups to raise funds. It brings many new visitors into our community each year.

RAL: Does this drive business to your local economy?

CE: Yes, especially on parade day as the businesses along the parade route see increased business.  We hope that potential customers see a shop or restaurant and want to come back and visit.

RAL: Does the event support a special cause in the community?

CE: Funds raised by Frontier Days helps to fund the Milford Miami Township Chamber of Commerce and supports scholarships to graduating seniors.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

CE: It is a small town festival that welcomes people from all over greater Cincinnati.  It has unique food opportunities, live music and the largest frog jumping contest in the midwest.
