Beer, Food, and Friendship, All for a Great Cause at the Knoxville Brewfest

Widely referred to as the capital of the Appalachia, Knoxville, Tennessee, is one of the top places to take a vacation in the Southeastern United States. The city was laid out and founded back in 1791, and was named after former Secretary of War Henry Knox.  Knoxville quickly became a center for commerce and culture for the entire region, however it didn't become a tourist attraction until the mid-20th century. This was partly due to a revitalization effort taking hold and helping to renovate many buildings and public places within the city. Knoxville is now a vibrant and activity-filled destination with over 180,000 full time residents. From unmatched live entertainment to some of the best attractions you’ll find anywhere, Knoxville has something for you.

Let your Knoxville experience begin with some of the city's world-class culinary establishments. You’ll find a spectrum of different restaurants, diners and bars, that offer something for you, no matter your taste or preference. Once you’ve had your fill of outstanding food, head to one of the great live local entertainment venues. Tennessee is famous for live music and in Knoxville you’ll find plenty of great live music venues, just waiting to entertain. Paired with an abundance of musical expression, there is also an outpouring of artisanal expression. You’ll encounter plenty of museums, art shows, exhibitions and galleries showcasing the unique talents of the city's artistic subculture. An ideal way to get to know the city and its people is during one of their major community events and festivals like the Knoxville Brewfest.

For the past six years the Knoxville Brewfest has established itself as one of the best beer fests in the region. Over 2,500 people are expected to be in attendance this year. Attendees will be treated to a massive selection of beers, more than 100 different options from over 80 different breweries as well as a nice selection of food vendors. The event is held right in the heart of the beautiful and historic downtown area, right next to the Historic Southern Railway Terminal. Don’t be fooled into thinking this event is just about great beer, new friends and tasty food. It also supports a great cause in CureDuchenne, which raises funds and awareness to find a cure for muscular dystrophy. We got the opportunity to sit down with Matt McMillan, Event Coordinator for the Knoxville Brewfest, to talk about this fun event.

RAL: Tell me a little bit about the event.

MM: Knoxville Brewfest is going on six years of providing a unique summer, beer sampling event in downtown Knoxville. It draws a crowd of 2,500 people to sample dozens of beers from over 80 breweries in the revitalized South of Magnolia and Old City neighborhoods.

RAL: What makes the event unique?

MM: The unique views of downtown and the old Southern Railway Station are a wonderful backdrop for couples, friends and families (21+ only) to enjoy a day without the kids, drinking craft beer for charity.

RAL: Tell me abou the local lodging situation.

MM: Our out-of-town guests flock in every year from all over the country to enjoy Knoxville Beer Week (June 11-18) and stay for the big tasting event. The Crowne Plaza has been a favorite lodging option due to its close proximity to the event. The nearby Holiday Inn is another favorite, and offers unique views of World's Fair Park. If you are looking for a more upscale, boutique option, make sure to book your room at the Oliver Hotel by Market Square.

RAL: How does the event affect the community?

MM: Brewfest brings a lot of people from all over the region to the downtown neighborhood. It has been exciting to see the Southern Railway Station and the surrounding neighborhood go from a less-traveled area, to a hot new part of town with lots of exciting new investment and development happening.

RAL: Do you support any special causes in the community?

MM: While seeing the neighborhood blossom has been a great side effect of the attention Brewfest brings, the event is put on to raise money for CureDuchenne muscular dystrophy. Having raised over $100,000 so far, Brewfest is excited to continue to make a lasting impact on treatment and helping to find a cure for duchenne. We are also excited about continuing to showcase local breweries and businesses to locals and visitors alike.

RAL: Why should people come?

MM: This is the perfect event to sample great beer, meet new folks, and have a great time. You get to do all this fun stuff and benefit a great cause like CureDuchenne. Anyone and everyone that is over 21 and loves great times and great beer should come down and join us in all the fun!!
