Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival: South Alabama's Top Spring Family Event

Take classic southern charm and hospitality, combine this with lush surroundings and fun activities, and the result is your next vacation destination: Foley, Alabama. The history of this friendly community dates back to 1901, when John B. Foley purchased the area where the city now resides. Initially, Foley planned to sell off the land for profit, but he soon came to the realization that development of the community would benefit his investment more. He ushered the railroad into town and donated parcels of land for a school and local churches. The fertile land attracted farmers and the community began to grow. In fact, it grew so fast that the city needed to incorporate in 1915, just to keep up. Currently, Foley has a population of over 15,000 and is one of the top tourist destinations in the region.

The minute you arrive in Foley, you're greeted by lush surroundings, gentle gulf breezes, friendly faces and plenty of fun things to do. Outdoor enthusiasts will relish the opportunities for exploring local parks, relaxing on the beach, hiking the scenic local trails, fishing at multiple locations and golfing at some scenic and challenging local courses. You’ll encounter great local shops, malls and outlet centers, if you're looking for a unique shopping experience. The area is home to many eating establishments that feature a diverse selection of great meals. One of the best times to visit Foley is during one of the big community events and festivals, like the highly anticipated Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival.

For over a 10 years now, the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival has been a popular and highly anticipated event for the region. Youngsters will love the kids carnival and taking tethered balloon rides. Make your next family vacation one that no one will forget and head to the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival. Resortsandlodges.com got the opportuntity to interview Danielle Faircloth, Events Director for the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, to talk about this unique event.

RAL: Tell me a little bit about the event.

DF: We are entering the 12th year of the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival. Each year the festival seems to grow and this year we are expecting over 80,000 people in attendance. We see everyone at the festival including couples, singles, families and groups of friends.

RAL: What makes the festival unique?

DF: This isn't just another music festival or arts and crafts event. Having our attendees get up close with over 40 Hot Air Balloons is not your typical event!

RAL: Walk me through what attendees can expect for activities.

DF: Here is a breakdown of the schedule.

May 5 - Balloon Glow at Tanger Outlets from 6pm - 7pm

May 6 - Festival Grounds from 2pm - 10pm (open to public)

May 7 - Festival Grounds from 9am - 10pm (open to public)

May 8 - Enjoy the balloons from afar as they soar through the sky! (NOT open to public)

The festival grounds contain something for everyone including: arts and crafts vendors, live demonstrations and entertainment, kids carnival, tethered balloon rides, festival faire and so much more.

RAL: Are there any lodging specials that are set up specifically for the event?

DF: Yes! We sell a discount card called "Balloon Bucks" that is valid April 29-May 8. the card is $25 and can be purchased online. It gives great discounts and has wonderful discounts on lodging. Click here to view.

RAL: Does this drive business to your local economy?

DF: Absolutely! We have so much going on with the Balloon Bucks discount card which directly drives business in the door to our presenting sponsor Tanger Outlets. It's a wonderful way to market the businesses within the community.

RAL: Does the event support a special cause in the community?

DF: I get this question a lot and I have to say it helps support the community in a way that some people may be blind to because it is not a tangible or monetary donation. All the money raised from the Balloon Festival goes to support the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber spends its money on, not only supporting, but maintaining business development and growth. So yes, I would have to say it is DIRECTLY affecting the community.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

DF: Every detail of our event is thought out for the customer's sake. We want them to experience an event that is unlike any other. It is not everyday that you get to be next to a hot air balloon or get the chance to ride in one, for that matter! We also are right next to the beautiful gulf coast. It is such a great time to book a hotel, condo, or house at the beach and drive 15 minutes up to enjoy our event!
