Make the journey to Alert Bay for Seafest and Musicfest, and see why the this area is held in such high regard. We got the chance to interview Kim Mercer, President of the Alert Bay Seafest and Musicfest, to talk about this fun family friendly event.

RAL: Tell me a little bit about the event.

KM: Alert Bay Seafest has been running for 33 years and Musicfest has been going on for 15 years. The events take place in the downtown area, where the road is closed for the day so attendees can spread out and enjoy themselves. This is a highly anticipated local event and people love coming to town to enjoy the beautiful natural landscape and the opportunity to reunite with old friends and meet new people. This year we are expecting to draw upwards of 200 to 500 people for the event. We mostly see people from the downtown area, but there are attendees that come from further out. It's all about families, kids, community and having a great time!.

RAL: What makes your event unique?

KM: We’ve managed to keep Seafest as old school as we possibly could. Good old fashioned fun for all.

During this time of year the weather is nice and warm. It's safe for families and to just let your kids have fun. We are there to enjoy each other’s company and welcome guests to the island. This is the perfect community for a family celebration such as ours.

RAL: Take me through the activities attendees will find at the event.

KM: Seafest kicks off with a fun and colorful parade, and opening ceremonies follow that. Some of the other activities you’ll find include giant inflatables that are set up for kids to enjoy free of charge. Also, there are vendors selling their unique wares and plenty of food. You’ll find fun games that are held in different locations, where teams are doing funny stunts in hopes of winning money. The Kids Got Talent Competition is fun and worth checking out. It takes place right on our ocean front.

Musicfest takes place during the second day of the event. Live music will be played for 12 hours straight by a variety of musical acts. In addition to the awesome music, the food and merchandise vendors will still be on hand.

RAL: Tell me about the local lodging situation.

KM: We have many places where visitors can stay. The Seine Boat Inn is a popular option that has guests that return many times over. Alert Bay Cabins is another great option and you’ll find additional B&B’s in the area.

Sometimes the lodging does fill up during the event, but we put on a water taxi that takes people back to other nearby islands.

RAL: Does the event provide a boost to the local economy?

KM: Yes it does. All the extra people entering the community are spending money on everything from lodging to food. This time of year is always welcomed by local merchants and business owners.

RAL: Why should people come?

KM: As soon as tourists see our island, they fall in love with it. We have a world renowned museum. The island is also home to the world's tallest totem pole. People come for the kakay, the native culture whales, and its uniqueness. We are who we are here, peaceful laidback people who enjoy our community and sharing it with other people.
